Engagement. It’s the holy grail in community management, but figuring out what content will strike a chord – especially with new community members – can be challenging. One of the best and most simple ways to encourage new members to participate in your conversations is to make them feel welcomed. It’s a basic rule of engagement, but one that we often overlook.
One community that has had huge success in new member engagement is the Professional Photographers of America. Read more about how Lindsay Starke, online community coordinator for the organization, created a thread in her community’s main forum specifically for new members.
Top 5 Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Community from Your Main Site
Can your members find your community site from your main www site? From doing an initial audit of our clients’ main websites, we found that it was fairly difficult to gain access to the community from many sites. If you haven’t already, we would encourage you to promote your community site on the homepage of your main site.
But how do you go about doing that? Continue reading for suggestions to drive traffic to your community from your main website.
Enable Auto-Login for Increased Engagement
Auto-login embeds a user's encrypted login information into community discussion group emails, allowing them to click on links in the emails and engage in the community site without having to login each time. This seemingly small configuration can have a big impact on engagement.
To learn more – and to learn how to set up auto-login for your own Connected Community – continue reading on HUG.
Post Weekly Tips and Tricks
When launching your Open Forum discussion group, have your community manager post weekly messages to the discussion group with tips to maximize members’ experience after he/she posts the initial welcome email.

Did you know that you can suggest a Connected Community report to the “Report Suggestions” community on HUG?
One of the most popular requests we’ve received is the Agreed To Terms report shown above. This report enables a community manager to view the users who have agreed to the terms required to be active within a community site.
Ideas for new reports are sourced directly from Higher Logic Connected Community clients via the “Report Suggestions” community on HUG. If a particular report is requested numerous times or would be particularly helpful, we will add it to our list of reports to develop. Since the 2013 HUG Super Forum, more than 40 reports have been released.
